Accommodation

The Czech Republic offers good hospitality services and facilities. There is a great variety of accommodation options. You will find top-class luxurious hotels, family hotels as well as rather modest hostels, motels, and camp sites.

To make your decision-making easier as to which accommodation facility to choose, we will recommend several options for each category and region.

Rating of accommodation facilities

We would like to inform you about the method for rating accommodation facilities in the Czech Republic and about those entities who are involved in the classification process.

Hotels are differentiated in a manner similar to that which you are used to in your own country; appended to the hotel name is a star symbol indicating the hotel quality. The number of stars indicates the comfort, equipment, and scope of services provided.

The number of stars can range from one (the simplest) to five (the most luxurious). Hotels with * are five-star hotels which are world-class facilities with excellent service. Sometimes these hotels also have the De Luxe attribute. Hotels with are four-star hotels offering a high standard and day and night service. Hotels with * are three-star hotels which are very well equipped and provide services to good levels. Hotels with are two-star hotels offering fairly good services and comfort. Hotels with * form a one-star hotel facility offering only basic equipment, and they usually provide no services; nonetheless, they still represent quite a decent accommodation option.

Classification of accommodation facilities

Luxurious category

The most luxurious, i.e. four- or five-star hotels, are primarily located in the capital city of Prague. This is easy to understand as most tourists come to the capital city despite the beauty and attractions of other regions of the Czech Republic. Nonetheless, even smaller Bohemian and Moravian cities and towns offer corresponding accommodation qualities. However, if you want to enjoy real luxury, you should choose one of the four- or five-star hotels in Prague.

Medium category

In this section dealing with accommodation, we will concentrate on the options for choosing a family hotel or a facility that will not require substantial funds on your part, and you will thus be able to enjoy cultural and other activities such as trips or sports.

Apartment hotels are very popular accommodation facilities, and there are countless such establishments in the Czech Republic, ready to accommodate all tourists used to such a type of accommodation. The apartment hotel is mostly a hotel-like accommodation in a very cosy setting with a family atmosphere. The average capacity is 30 beds.

Hotels are one of the most frequent accommodation options used, something that most of us are used to. This category includes hotels with a wider range and variety of services that can make your stay pleasant and exceptional. Most rooms have their own bathrooms, satellite TV, mini-bar, and a safe-deposit box.

Motels – if you travel with your own car and want to spend a night on your way to a destination, possibly by a highway, or if you just feel that you are no longer driving safely, you should stop at one of the motels that are usually located right along a road or in its vicinity. You will be satisfied with one night in such a facility, and in the morning after breakfast you can continue on your way.

Botels are not a frequent type of accommodation in the Czech Republic, but you can find a few such facilities in the capital city right on the Vltava River.

Simple accommodation options

You do not have to stay in a five-star suite in order to be able to see the beauty of Prague and other towns in the Czech Republic. We would also like to point out accommodation options for travellers who are on limited budgets yet want to pursue their hobby of travelling.

Hostels and lodging houses mostly do not offer much luxury, and sometimes their services are also very limited. In addition, it is important to bear in mind that these facilities are usually open in the summer season only since during the rest of the year they are used as student dormitories. Nonetheless, you can also find lodging houses operating all year round.

In most cases, lodging houses do not offer any particular luxury, and sometimes they provide very limited services. They usually have a reception, a room where you can watch TV, and a separate socializing room or a study room. Some lodging houses even offer the option of having breakfast. Toilets and bathrooms are mostly communal and are located at the end of a corridor on each floor, or at least several rooms share a bathroom; rooms with their own bathrooms can be found very rarely. These accommodation facilities can be located both in the centre and in the outskirts of towns and cities.

Another less expensive option is accommodation in camp sites. The Czech Republic has a very good network of camp sites and recreation facilities where you can stay in a tent or caravan. These facilities are, moreover, often situated in very nice settings. It is clear that camp sites differ in the quality of services provided. Usually, a regular Czech camp site offers very good flushable toilet and showering facilities where you can maintain all hygienic standards. Areas for tents are usually very well kept, and they are mostly covered with grass.

If you come with your own mobile home, you can park the caravan or touring trailer at a place with a 220V/16A power connection and a drinking water supply. As regards water, to be sure that the water is drinkable you should ask the receptionist or facility manager. Cars can usually be parked close to your spot, regardless of whether you are staying in a tent, chalet, bungalow, or a family hotel. Parking fees are usually charged for cars.

The range of camp site equipment available in most cases depends on the camp owner’s financial standing and the levels may differ considerably. Therefore, today’s camp sites are, similarly to hotels, marked with stars. These indicate a lot about the quality of the camp site and the equipment that you can expect.

In the Czech Republic it is sometimes possible to camp for free, but many places may be subject to restrictions or bans and, therefore, you should first become informed about the location.

Professional associations and certification of accommodation facilities

On October 25, 2006 the Association of Service Industry and Tourism Entrepreneurs (HO.RE.KA ČR) merged with the National Federation of Hotels and Restaurants of the Czech Republic (NFHR ČR) to become the Association of Hotels and Restaurants of the Czech Republic (AHR ČR). This association will raise the quality of hotels and gastronomic services for both domestic and foreign tourists.

It is an independent, voluntary, apolitical and open-interest group. The AHR ČR will ensure that all operators of accommodation will receive a certification of quality on the basis of an official uniform classification system for all accommodation in the Czech Republic.

AHR ČR tends to the interests of entrepreneurs in the hospitality industry and is also active in the area of education (The College of Tourism, Hotel and Spa Management). The association of hotels is a member of the HOTREC organization, which represents the interests of the sector within the EU and the IH&RA international hotel association.

Accommodation in Prague

Our next advice is for those who wish to stay in the capital city of Prague, be it to go sightseeing, to visit the State Opera, or to enjoy a great variety of shopping and entertainment opportunities. Important factors for selecting accommodation in Prague do not only include the quality and the price level but also the location of the given facility.

There are many branded hotels of top quality in Prague, yet you have to accept the fact that the prices you will pay for quality services will be a bit higher, similarly as with other countries. Of course, there are many less expensive alternatives that will also satisfy the quality-seeking customer. If you are a student or if price is a major factor for you, you will also find suitable accommodation options in Prague. Quality hostels or camp sites may be the right option for you. When selecting accommodation, you should not only follow your preferences according to the service quality and the equipment but you should also consider whether or not you wish to stay in a suburb or right in the historical city centre. This aspect is very important as it determines how much time you will spend travelling around Prague, or whether you will be close to the evening and night-time social and cultural activities.

If you wish to breathe the magical atmosphere of the capital city and be at the centre of the action, you should find a place to stay in downtown Prague or in its vicinity. You will easily find and see all the sights and monuments, experience the daily life of Prague citizens, and get to know the nightlife of Prague.

Since the Czech Republic is quite well situated in Europe, people do not come here just to go and see sights and experience natural beauty but also to solve business matters. Political leaders as well as various foreign companies and professional associations organize their important conferences and congresses in the country.
